Snitz : OpenRice.Com Review

rsz_1mbp_pinkChristmas traffic has definitely hit Manila (and Quezon City). I had to experience it over the last weekend. Batangas to Manila which usually just takes 3 hours at the most became a 10-hour ride. In fact, while in transit, we were able to watch a total of three movies (No Escape, AntMan and MazeRunner2)! Yep, traffic was that bad and the wait was that long. It didn’t help that the big malls in Fairview were on sale and two out of three big malls were scheduled for their first fireworks display. It was snail-pace traffic again from Commonwealth all the way to Fairview. And so as soon as I landed in Fairview, I had to head to a spot with food, Snitz, Ayala Fairview Terraces.

I didn’t realize that Snitz is originally found in London, there was nothing about the food that suggested it was from London. We went for what seemed like filling because our feet were so tired from walking around the mall looking for the perfect PE shoes for my boys. We opted to have chicken schnitzel with different sauces, honey lemon, tartar sauce and chinese sweet and sour sauce. Unfortunately, none of it was a hit to our taste bud, we opted to go for the chicken minus the sauce.

Dekada : OpenRice.Com Review

rsz_1mbp_pink

If you are driving towards Ayala Fairview Terraces, the first thing you see are the bright lit wall of Dekada restaurant. If you are on the lookout for a quiet nook, it has its own walkway and not too much foot traffic around it. It is also connected to Wellworth ground floor and offers additional quiet space if you want to dine al fresco. Dekada offers a meryenda buffet served daily from 2pm to 6pm for only Php200.00, yep, it is eat-all-you-can for all your favourite Pinoy meryenda specialties.

20151110_152910

It is when you are starting to feel the Christmassy cold afternoons and I just went straight to the buffet table and had a big serving of arroz caldo with hard boiled egg. It was so tasty, I didn’t need to put any condiment on it. It may be a weird combination but I followed it with traditional pansit. Would have loved it warmer, nevertheless, I super enjoyed it I finished off the entire plate over tastier conversation with friends.

20151110_162219

Remembering Manila days when one can step out of the house and have your pick from a long list of meryenda options. This list always includes turon. Interestingly, I paired it with palitaw with a generous amount of sugar. Not a big fan of niyog, so I helped myself to sugar instead. They also serve brown or muscovado sugar.

20151110_162228 20151110_152923(0) 20151110_152931Then you can move on to their dinuguan and puto. Just take the time to scoop not too many pork bits. Other varieties on the table? There is their ginataang mais and halo halo.

Mister Kabab : OpenRice.Com Review

rsz_1mbp_pink

Everyone must have known by now that there is a Mister Kabab restaurant in Ayala Fairview Terraces. Back in the late 90’s, there was just one Mister Kabab restaurant located in West Avenue corner Quezon Avenue. It is a Persian restaurant that serves unique food. I remember lining up for a queue that stretches right outside along the road because there was just so many people who want to visit and eat. It is the same flavour that everyone has known to enjoy and the eating experience is even better. Because the other branches we have tried (Technohub and Fairview Terraces) both offer airconditioned rooms. Their kitchen seem to be different, too. I remember the first branch was not airconditioned because the kitchen vents out the smoke right inside the resto. It makes people hungrier smelling the food. The mall branches may not have this but it has the same yummy flavour that we always crave for.

WP_20151016_002

We will never let the day pass without ordering our Mister Kabab fave Keema (beef with special Persian flavour) and we usually put white sauce that goes with it. This is perfect for buttered rice (they used to serve it with more butter instead of the current’s pinch of butter on plain rice). You may opt to have keema with pita bread instead of rice. My husband enjoys it with chilli sauce, too. I enjoy my meal better with mango shake.

Caramia : OpenRice.Com Review

rsz_1mbp_pink

And so my gastronomic and tummy-filling relationship with Open Rice still continues. Tastier September may have ended but Yummy October has started and will stretch to Delish November. It seems my Christmas season has started early with the amount of eating I will need to do, but enjoying every second of it. I am not new to the cake scene and in fact, have tried Sonja’s Cupcakes (no longer in Terraces), Tous Les Jours, and even Cake2Go. I am no cake connoisseur but I certainly know my cake.

We were surprised to find out that we walked into Caramia Fairview Terraces in perfect timing, as they offer a 20% off your total receipt when you dine with them between 1pm to 6pm. With the amount of food we had, glad to see a receipt that was under Php500.00.

20151020_163111

First slice to try is Pistaccio Cioccolata, lightly roasted pistaccio brimming with chocolate. Imagine the yum level of a home made refrigerator cake and take that taste to tons of delicious level. If you like the mixed taste of nuts and chocolates on your taste buds, this will be a big hit.

20151020_153727

Caramia is a chocolate cake heaven. Next up was Dream Chocolate cake. It is not like your regularly-red-boxed chocolate cake, not too sweet but flavored enough to take you to eat a couple of slices or even more!

20151020_163129

Sometimes I get confused if what I was eating was regular cake or gelato cake and it is the same delicious and happy confusion I got when I tasted Sea Salted Honey Crunch. There is light mocha cream sandwiched inside the cake and there are solid candy crunchies on top. Just go easy with snacking on the topping, I originally thought it was soft, I gulped a big one with a hard crunch surprise.

Conti’s : OpenRice.Com Review

rsz_1mbp_pinkPinoys are always big about the food served on the table. For one, we have one too many family traditions celebrated with food! It is your hamon and bibingka during Christmas, it is your festive fruits and keso de bola on media noche, it is your pansit or spaghetti on birthday meet-ups, or your brewed coffee and cake combo on afternoon visits from friends. And so at the workplace, it is also common for us to either eat at the pantry (which serves good food!) or step out at least once a week, to take time off the walls of your office, or to engage with happy-thoughts-conversations with your favorite people from work.

20151014_133955

And so when we heard that Conti’s is now at Fairview Terraces, we didn’t waste the time to go in and sample what people are raving about. Of course, we have already tried their famous mango bravo cake countless times, it has become Pinoy’s favorite cake present or even favorite potluck dessert to bring.

20151014_134345

Trust Pinoy restaurants to always have the classic carbonara on their menu. And trust me to always go for one. I will probably have to write a separate blog post about the countless carbonara’s I have tried from different restos. So how different is this? For one, it is served warm, it didn’t taste like it has been plated hours before you ordered them. That can’t happen with Conti’s as most of the tables have wait lists.

20151014_140523

Pinoys end a good meal with dessert with an S! We tried two: Mango Cheesecake and the one we will never get tired of: Mango Bravo.

Friday’s : OpenRice.Com Review

rsz_1mbp_pink

The first thing that greets you the moment you step into Friday’s Fairview Terraces restaurant is the warm smile from its staff. You are then ushered into a table you prefer and the staff right away introduces himself as your server for the day. Ours really went out of his way to come back to our table periodically to ask if there is anything else we will need. Even before the food came, we were liking our experience.

20150825_163256So it was time to sample what we came here for: the food! The first plate served was Chili Ballpark Nachos. It was a plate full of nachos with pork and cheesy nachos sauce. Unlike other nachos plates from other restos, this one has all nachos on the plate covered with sauce and meat! It didn’t go as fast because serving was big enough for me and three other colleagues from work.

FB_IMG_1443258799440

That was not all we loved at Friday’s. There was also their chicken fingers and fries. I automatically made a mental note to try this next time with my kids. So it whiles away fun dining time while munching on delicious fare on the table. It comes served with lemon and dips. By the way, the fries do not taste like they are fresh soaking from the deep fry machine. It is served with less oil and with the right amount of crisp.

More foodies to try with Friday’s include Tortilla Crusted Fish Tacos and their fries served with mini-burgers. Best to visit before peak dining hours to find the best spot for conversation or for viewing sports telecasts on the screens.

Crisostomo : OpenRice.Com Review

rsz_1mbp_pink

You may have probably already watched Heneral Luna, the movie. By the looks of my social media pages, all posting shoutouts with long-forgotten Pinoy words such as nakapagpapabagabag (it is even hard to spell!) or datapwat sapagkat. I have never heard kabigha-bighani since ages but now the Pinoy classic words are back. And so, no wonder, we just have to try Crisostomo today. To cap that final Heneral Luna moment, we looked for a perfect spot and started browsing through their menus.

20150926_121625

What is interesting about this restaurant is the fact that all their dishes has a Pinoy flavour from its name down to its taste. And so we got started with Pilosopong Pinakbet. This pinakbet seemed to be topped with crispy-pata-like meat. The sauce of pinakbet also is thicker than your usual pinakbet. In fact, the sauce reminded me very much of our kare-kare.

20150926_121649Next up is Sinigang ni Kapitan, shrimp sigang served on top of a ceramic heater. Just be careful serving it to kids on the table as the heater comes complete with small flame right under it. Shrimp on it did not disappoint. It was big enough that each dish can very well serve four!

IMG_20150303_201739Familiar with Crispin and Basilio? Well ask for Crispin and Basilio and you will be served their tokwa’t baboy. It is known to be a Pinoy appetizer but my husband loves eating it with rice and now, my boys do the same.

20150926_125156

IMG_20150926_165908With all of the Pinoy flavour, we just had to order and try their sweet treats. My son went for chocolate shake, originally wanted to try choco mani shake but he changed his mind and didn’t want to experiment and just opted with the classic chocolate cake. Lastly, I tried Olympia, their mangoes and cream pie with a generous heap of cubed ripe mangoes on top.

Will surely try Crisostomo, with or without the Heneral Luna movie experience.

Seafood Island : OpenRice.Com Review

rsz_1mbp_pink

Boodle fight is an eating experience originally done by military groups as part of their community engagement activities. This is where long tables are set up with banana leaves as plates, and with food served for everyone who is encouraged to eat with their hands. Boodle fight meals served on banana leaves on top of a huge wood tray is what Seafood Island has been known for.

20150828_191026

Get ready for a review of the most abundant dish there is, 10 to 12 different Pinoy food served as one dish, eaten boodle-fight-style. Catch up with friend 15 other friends (the only way this can work would be if you have more people sharing the boodle tray, otherwise, get ready to have tummy ache out of too much food right after a week of not having food).   So Mt. Apo includes fried fish, lato, shrimp, inihaw na pusit, bagoong, roasted port, roasted chicken, crab and kinilaw. Whew, a mouthful to say and a mouthful to eat, literally! Lato, mostly known as seaweed (sorry, no known English translation for this). This definitely reminds me of dinner time with my dad, who taught me how to eat this with rice and oyster sauce.

FB_IMG_1443526096951-1

At another time, tried Tali Beach with friends from my previous workplace. Food is best experienced over milestone conversations and so it was definitely a bonus to try it which comes complete with green mango, watermelon, steamed eggplant, roasted chicken, barbeque, lato, fried fish and inihaw na pusit.

FB_IMG_1443527172067

Be ready to allot longer time to eat at Seafood Island, boodle food trays are best enjoyed at a leisurely pace.

Chili’s : OpenRice.Com Review

rsz_1mbp_pink

What I love best about Tastier September is writing about my food experiences and capturing them on my page. I have not said enough and I will say it again, food is best enjoyed with meaningful relationships. And so it is common to see me sampling food for sharing, or opting for dishes with bigger than usual serving size. I think I have gotten used to finishing up my kids’ food, that it has become second nature for me to make sure I sample food from someone else’s plate. Sorry to those who find this behavior annoying but me and most of my friends do!

Screenshot_2015-09-25-17-25-39-1

On to our next food adventure, Chili’s Fairview Terraces. It is key to note that another branch I have tried is Mall of Asia (by the bay). Surprisingly, food flavor is the same, unlike other restaurants who tend to serve same dishes with different flavors from different branches.

FB_IMG_1443529324250-1

If you want to have chicken meat strips with grilled bread, opt for Chicken Fajita Quesadillas. Super liked the cheese flavor mixed with the white chicken meat (yep, the healthy chicken meat part!). Not a healthy eater myself, I usually go for the skin when eating chicken but with these quesadillas, I did not even notice I am gulping down the white meat.

FB_IMG_1443529381544

By the way, you may want to save your receipts because the next time you dine in, you get to claim their Fajita Nachos free! It is like their trademark quesadilla minus the filling. Of course, everyone knows there is unlimited nachos from Chili’s. Pair it with unlimited iced tea and you will never run out of food on the table. Crunchy nachos they even replace if it took too long to finish from your tables.

FB_IMG_1443529503530-1

Other menu stops you cannot miss: Cilantro Pesto Shrimp Pasta and Triple Dipper (egg rolls, fried chicken and fish fillets).

rsz_1mbp_pinkWant to know where you can get Buy One Take One fabulously excellent meals in Quezon City? Or better, right in the heart of Fairview! Read up to know.

At Burgoo, you get the second dish free if you order any of their available dishes from a select premium list for the day. We got the Grilled Steak ala Pobre free for getting their rib-eye steak. Did not expect that premium restaurants can also offer buy one take one for big-serving-dishes, i thought it was just something for fast food or budget restaurants. Now, this makes date nights practical while giving you fine-dining-food-experience.

Screenshot_2015-10-02-13-26-52-1

After gobbling up what seemed like tons of steak infront of us, neutralize the taste with their nachos. But these are not your boring nachos because it is teeming with cheese and cheese and lots of cheese.

2015-10-02 13.24.37

My husband and I usually stay in the first table at the right, nearest to the door, whether we walk in with friends or just ourselves. On your way out, your server will also hand you two coupons still, so you can enjoy your next Burgoo Buy One Take One premium meals.
